Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars take on Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs for a Monday night showdown in Jacksonville. Lawrence is 0-3 in his career against the Chiefs going 0-2 in regular season matchups and 0-1 in the playoffs. This is probably the most even the rosters have been to this point in Lawrence's career though and should give him is best shot at getting his first win in this series. The Jaguars are off to their first 3-1 start since 2018 and while Lawrence's stat line hasn't been great he has made plays when the team has needed it most. Mahomes and the Chiefs got off to a slow 0-2 start but have battled back with wins the last two weeks. Mahomes had his best game of the season by far last week against the Ravens throwing 4TDs, no picks, and completing 68% of his passes. Here's how things look for these guys through 4 weeks:
2025 Stats Through Week 4
Trevor Lawrence 3-1
Pass Yds | Pass TDs | INTs | Completion % | Rushing Yds | Rushing TDs |
845 | 5 | 4 | 58.5 | 32 | 0 |
Patrick Mahomes 2-2
Pass Yds | Pass TDs | INTs | Completion % | Rushing Yds | Rushing TDs |
939 | 7 | 1 | 61.3 | 130 | 2 |
Mahomes stats are a bit distorted by his 4 TD game against what is probably the worst defense in the league currently in the Baltimore Ravens. It'll be interesting to see if his turnaround is the product of the Chiefs offense actually figuring some things out or if it was just an outlier against a really bad defense missing 6 of its starters. There was a lot of vintage/typical Mahomes type plays last week. If you run zone he will simply find a tight end or running back that's settled in to a soft spot. If you run man he will just buy time until someone breaks open or the Chiefs offense will use motion and speed at WR to create a mismatch. If you only bring 4 Mahomes will buy time until he finds a hole in the defense. If you blitz he'll find the mismatch pre-snap and get the ball out quick. The Chiefs simply don't have the horses right now to be the same explosive offense they were when he threw for 50TDs in 2018 but argue he's been a much smarter QB than that guy the last few years.
The flip side of this is that Mahomes weakness is still the same as its been since he entered the league. You have to be able to get pressure up the middle with as few guys as possible. It's very hard to do but it's no coincidence that his worst statistical games came against the Giants and Eagles who have two very good defensive lines. He torched the Ravens but if you look at the few plays the Ravens defense did have success against him they were able to get quick pressure up the middle.
Trevor Lawrence and the wide receivers finally started to get it together a little bit against a very good 49ers defense. He had his first turnover free game of the year which actually snapped a 6 game INT streak dating back to last season. While the day wasn't perfect for him, he and the offense had their best half of football and best drive of the season on Sunday. Lawrence was a scorching 8/8 for 84 yards including a 28 yard dime up the seam to Travis Hunter on 3rd and 15 from his own 6 yard line. He capped off the drive with a perfectly thrown ball to TE Hunter Long for a four yard touchdown. He finished the first half 15/20 for 132 yards and a touchdown. If Liam Coen can get this Trevor Lawrence more often the Jaguars will be a very dangerous offense going forward.
The bad from Sunday was that while the passing game looked better and did have a nice half of football, the same issues they had to start the year popped back up in the 2nd half. Lawrence was just 6/11 for 44 yards in the 2nd half and almost threw a game changing INT on his own side of the field that was correctly called back for Pass Interference. It still wasn't a good decision and he was lucky to get away with it. This came after he missed a deep comeback route to an open Travis Hunter and got a check down to Ettiene batted down at the line. He'll have to put together a complete game Monday night if he wants to get his first win against the Chiefs.
